Staff Stories: Meet Leia
I started working at HopeWorks in 2014. I had to complete several internships while I was in college; two of those were spent working with people experiencing homelessness and severe mental illness. I really enjoyed them, and after I graduated I started looking for job openings in that field. I was lucky enough to find an opening at HopeWorks! In 2020, I moved into a director position as the head of the PSR program. PSR aims to provide support, education, and guidance for people with mental illness and their families. I love getting to be a part of our client’s journeys. Seeing them network and reintegrate through social, wellness, and recovery activities is a joy.
I am proud of all the work I have done with this agency, but I especially enjoyed the time I spent on the picnic committee. Taking the time to find a way to give back to all of my amazing coworkers and watching them enjoy the day has always been rewarding.
One lesson that really sticks out to me from my role is the importance of being intentional about checking in with people. We’ve all been so cut off and isolated the last two years that it’s really important it is to keep checking in and making sure people are okay, even if you can’t see them in person.
Outside of work, I spend a lot of time with my family. I like reading, mostly fantasy and science fiction. I really enjoy cooking and love trying new recipes or learning new skills in the kitchen. I also sing in my church choir, and that’s probably my biggest form of self-care during the week.
